DIY: How To Clean Makeup Brushes

Hi, everyone. Happy Thursday. We, makeup fanatics, can spend hours after hours perfecting our winged eyeliner or matte foundation. But how many of us spend the time to clean our makeup brushes? Cleaning the makeup brushes seems like a dull job that can be done “later” but that “later” never comes. Let’s find out how to clean makeup brushes and why it is needed.

Why do you need to wash makeup brushes

  • Unwashed makeup brushes contain makeup residues that damage the brushes
  • The makeup residues may reduce the lifespan of a brush
  • Harmful bacteria can be found trapped in the bristles of unwashed makeup brushes
  • Dirt from environment and oil from your skin can be transferred to the brushes
  • You definitely will have a breakout if you keep using unwashed brushes
  • Using unwashed brushes on your already damaged or cut skin can result in serious skin infection
So now that you know it is imperative to wash the brushes, let’s see the ways you can do it.

The most common and popular method of cleaning makeup brushes is using either gentle shampoo or makeup brush cleanser. You can choose any of them but the method of washing is almost the same. The American television personality Lauren Conrad and thebeautydepartment blog, both shared their way of cleaning makeup brushes with shampoo in their blog and website.

  • Firstly, you need to clean your brush gently under lukewarm water.
  • You will need a bowl filled with warm water.
  • Then you need to add a tablespoon of either a mild shampoo (it could be a baby shampoo or organic shampoo as well) or a professional makeup brush cleanser. Make bubbles.
  • After that, dip your makeup brushes into the water filled bowl and swirl it for few minutes.
  • Rinse it under running cold water
  • If dirty water runs from the brush then keep doing the previous two steps
  • Once you see clear water is coming from the brush you can reshape the brush and let it air dry by setting it on a flat surface.
If you use spray type of brush cleanser
  • Then, just spray the product directly on the brush
  • And rub the brushes, by doing the motion of back and forth, on a paper towel or tissue. You will see dirt coming out of the brushes.
  • Keep doing it until no makeup gunk comes out of the brushes
  • And that’s it.

The popular blog Thebeautydepartment showed how you can clean makeup brushes with vinegar. If you don’t want to spend money on brush cleanser or if you think gentle shampoo is not working for you, try this method

  1. Take a cup of boiled water. Wait for few minutes before adding two teaspoons of vinegar in it and stir.
  2. Take the brush and after dipping it into the cup swirl it around against the bottom of the cup.
  3. Rinse the brush twice. First with running hot water and for the second time use cold water.

  • Make your own brush cleaning schedule and make sure to follow it.
  • Do a deep clean once a month
  • Never dry the brush in an upright position (water will seep inside the place of the brush that holds the handle and bristles together. Water will eventually dissolve the glue and the bristles will start to fall out)
  • Dry your brushes on a flat surface or bristles facing down
  • You can use brush shampoos or gentle shampoos, whatever works best for your brushes
  • Try to do the gentle cleaning after every uses.
  • Blog thechrisellefactor suggests you swirl the brush into the solution water for 30 or so seconds.
So you see, it’s very simple! You should go right now and clean those dirty brushes. All the best wishes for you, lovelies, Thank You.
